Card payment surcharges are ending

From 1 October 2026, businesses in Australia will no longer be able to charge a surcharge when you pay with an eftpos, Mastercard or Visa card.

This means the price you see should be the price you pay, without an additional card surcharge being added at checkout.

The change follows reforms announced by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) and is designed to make card payments simpler and more transparent for consumers.

The changes apply when eligible cards are used for:

  • In-store purchases
  • Online purchases
  • Payments made through digital wallets
  • Phone payments

Current card surcharge rules remain in place until 1 October 2026.
